This unicorn box set was mailed directly from the PolyGram East Coast offices to me in 1993 to launch their historic \"Funk Essentials\" reissue campaign. This box set is one serious old school party!
The outer slipcase carries the internal label designation SACD 696 (\"Special Advance Compact Disc\") and features the iconic purple/yellow Funk Essentials branding with a 1970s styled model on the spine. Because these sets were assembled corporate-side for top-tier urban radio stations before retail distribution, the individual CDs are pristine first-pressings without unsightly promo stamps, drill holes, or saw-cuts. These early PolyGram silver pressings have that trademark mirror shine. ✨ 💿
The mid-1990s was the sweet spot for R&B and Funk CD reissues. It occurred right before the industry-wide \"Loudness War\" took full effect. Later compilations, streaming versions, and modern brick-walled brick-and-mortar CD masterings pushed the volume to the absolute maximum. This squashed the transients, distorted the low-end, and flattened the spatial image. The 90s Funk Essentials discs preserve the original dynamic range. That means less fatigue for your ears!

Completely free of creases, folds, or fading.• JEWEL CASES: Exhibit minor surface scuffing solely due to the snug, high-friction fit inside the custom outer slipcase.• CASE EDGES: The right-facing paperboard edge of the outer slipcase shows minor edge-fraying from sliding the jewel cases in and out over the last 30+ years.
