The chrysanthemum occupies a special place in European painting of the second half of the 19th century. Long considered an essentially decorative motif, it then became a true pictorial subject, allowing artists to work on the volumes of the flowers, the variations of light, and the relationships between light tones and darker backgrounds.

In France, the motif is particularly associated with Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), who produced numerous floral still lifes and several compositions devoted to chrysanthemums. Her Annual Chrysanthemums from 1889, preserved at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, testifies to the importance of this subject in his work. The Musée d\'Orsay also keeps several compositions of chrysanthemums, notablyErnest Laurent andAlfred Renaudin.

ANTOINE Vollon (1833-1900) constitutes another particularly relevant French reference: the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims retains an important Chrysanthemums, oil on canvas, in which the bouquet is also treated as a real subject of painting and not as a simple decorative element.

We can also relate the subject to the production ofEugène Henri Cauchois (1850-1911), a recognized specialist in flowers and still lifes, whose compositions of chrysanthemums often present abundant bouquets on relatively dark backgrounds. A work by Cauchois of very similar dimensions, 50 × 61.5 cm, is notably listed under the title Chrysanthemum throw.

These connections are historical and stylistic only. The signature visible at the bottom left is not sufficiently legible to allow a certain identification of the author and no attribution is proposed.

In an international context, the theme of chrysanthemums also appears among Dennis Miller Bunker (United States, 1861-1890), whose Chrysanthemums from 1888, housed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, constitutes an important example of early American impressionist painting, as well as at Lovis Corinth (Germany, 1858-1925), who produced several floral still lifes with chrysanthemums in his mature period.

These references allow us to place the present work in a broader context of the development of floral painting between France, America and Germany at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. They do not constitute proposals for attribution.

The 61 × 46 cm format corresponds to a classic easel painting format and allows the floral composition to maintain a significant presence while remaining suitable for a domestic display or a collection of flower paintings.
