A beautiful rare 19th Century terracotta jug, originally used for storing and transporting liquids such as water, oil, and wine, boasting a distinctive design with three sturdy handles and a prominent pouring spout. Similar to French confit pots, it is a traditional half glazed pot that was primarily used in the Southwest of France. It has a part ochre-yellow glazed top half and terracotta lower half which could be buried in the earth to keep the contents cool. Hand made, the glazing process created the characterful marking with a yellow glaze with variation in tone.
The jug\'s generous proportions and rustic patina speak to its utilitarian past, making it a captivating example of traditional craftsmanship. Now, it serves as a striking decorative piece, whether as a sculptural statement in a minimalist space or a rustic centerpiece. With a weathered patina, this pot measures approx. 39cm tall and 35cm wide (handle to handle). This pot has markings and patina in keeping with its age and use, including worn glaze and chips to the rim, handles and body, as pictured. A lovely addition to any home.
