This listing is for a pair of Kapton Foil fragments which were carried onboard the perilous flight of Apollo 13, from April 11–17, 1970. The artifacts have been attached to a Certificate of Authenticity, and the certificate has an additional hand-written inscription and autograph from Apollo 13 Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise.
This foil was attached to the exterior of the Command Module Odyssey to provide thermal insulation. It was exposed to vacuum of space, and it protected the astronauts from both the cold of outer space and the heat of re-entry. On April 15, this material went around the far side of the moon.After the return of Apollo 13, the Kapton Foil was removed by NASA engineers. Some of this foil was obtained by Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff Inc, one of the most notable and trusted archivists of Apollo material in the world. Clarkson created this presentation and has certified its authenticity.
Fred Haise has written the following inscription on the display: \"It was a great insulator! Frosty air poured out of Odyssey after splashdown. - Fred Haise - Apollo 13 LMP\".
