Offered for sale is a distinctive vintage Hopi pottery pipe signed “Edith Nash” and acquired in association with the collection of anthropologist Mary Anne Stein. Edith Nash is documented as a Hopi potter active from approximately the 1940s through the 1970s.
The pipe is formed in warm red/orange clay and features an unusual sculptural ear-of-corn motif, with the corn rendered in cream and black and surrounded by raised dark leaves. A painted corn plant motif also decorates the body of the pipe.
The underside bears the handwritten “Edith Nash” signature along with a corn hallmark associated with her Corn Clan affiliation. Also present is a faint penciled inscription appearing to read “2-27.”
