Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters take their bus, Furthur, across the country on LSD, then bring the acid tests back to California and turn them into something between a party and a religion. Wolfe embeds himself in the scene and writes from inside it, borrowing the group\'s own slang, capital letters, and fractured rhythm to put the reader in the middle of the trip. The book follows the Pranksters through parties, road trips, and a growing following that starts to treat Kesey as a kind of guru.

Wolfe was a leading figure in the New Journalism movement of the 1960s, applying novelistic technique to nonfiction reporting. This account came out in 1968, as the counterculture it describes was reaching a much wider public. Farrar Straus and Giroux published it, and this copy is their Book Club Edition, printed for members rather than sold through general retail channels.

Worth Knowing

The bus driver on that cross-country trip was Neal Cassady, the same restless traveler who inspired Dean Moriarty in Kerouac\'s On the Road. The counterculture of the 1960s and the Beat generation of the 1950s turn out to share more than a few members.
