DESCRIPTION
An intriguing early 19th-century Grand Tour portrait roundel or tondo, finely carved in Carrara marble with the profile bust of a gentleman presented in the manner of an ancient Roman portrait.
The sitter is shown in profile wearing Classical drapery, secured at the shoulder by a circular fibula or brooch. The portrait is carved in low relief within a simple raised circular border, recalling the format of ancient Roman portrait medallions, cameos and imperial coinage.
