This 14.6g (0.47 Troy Oz) gold nugget is at the pinnacle of crystalline reef specimens from western Australia for its size. 98% of the gold extracted from Earth is gold dust in quartz or other ore. 2% of the gold extracted from Earth is the size of a flake or larger, all which are labeled "nuggets". Among that, nearly all nuggets are alluvial gold—also known as placer gold, which is gold that has been released from source rocks by weather and erosion, then transported and deposited by flowing water in streams, rivers, and ancient riverbeds. It is extremely rare for a gold nugget of this relatively large size to have formed with aggressive crystalline reef structure and be able to be extracted directly from the source rock without erosion. The gold tests very high purity. This is gold in its most natural, raw and pristinely artistic state.
Because the specimen is so unique, the miner sent it to NGC to have it placed in a large slab to keep its delicate shape well-protected. It is a museum piece available for a private collector looking for something extraordinary.
