The opening nine volumes of the Duke-Edinburgh edition, the standard scholarly edition of the Carlyle correspondence. Charles Richard Sanders of Duke University began the project in 1952 with a search for surviving manuscript letters that eventually located more than ten thousand. The print edition ran from 1970 to 2023 and reached completion at fifty volumes. These nine cover the years 1812 to 1837, from Thomas Carlyle\'s early years through the publication of The French Revolution.
The correspondence documents the marriage and intellectual partnership of Thomas Carlyle, the Scottish essayist and historian born at Ecclefechan, and Jane Welsh Carlyle of Haddington, whose letters are regarded as among the finest in nineteenth-century English. Correspondents across the full edition include Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Stuart Mill, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, John Ruskin, Alfred Tennyson and Elizabeth Gaskell.

Uniform publisher\'s binding in cream cloth with gilt-lettered green labels, black and white plates. Volumes 1 through 4 housed in the publisher\'s illustrated slipcase.
Condition Notes: Slipcase with edge splits/wear as pictured. 1st four books show almost no wear to covers (the slipcase protected them) but foxing spots on the cloth of the spine. Books 5-9 have foxing spots on the top page edges and show some minor shelf/storage wear to boards with minor dust soiling given the white covers. All books have a previous owner stamp on the page edges. No obvious internal writing or highlighting.
