The John W. Lovell Company was formed in 1882 in New York. It grew to be a major American publishing house known for mass-producing inexpensive, unauthorzed reprint series. Before the United States passed the International Copyright Act of 1891 (the Chace Act), foreign authors like Lewis Carroll held no U.S. copyright protection. American publishers freely printed and sold British books without paying royalties or needing permission.
In 1890, Mr.Lovell reorganized the company in New Jersey under the name United States Book Company. The company failed in 1893 amid a collapsing reprint publishing market under the new 1891 copyright regulations, as well as the effects of the widespread financial panic of 1893.
