Elegant sterling silver compote bowl by William Kerr & Co. of Newark, NJ made in the late 1800s or possibly just after the turn of the century before the maker was bought out by Gorham Silver Co. in 1906. This rare piece has a wide, shallow bowl with a decorative floral repousse border and a matching pedestal base. The underside is stamped with the William Kerr & Co. hallmark and \'STERLING\'. It is solid sterling silver, weighs over a pound and is in excellent condition with a bright silver color with a highly polished finish.
DESIGN & DETAIL:The wide, undulating organic rim features deeply chased, multi-petaledchrysanthemum and daisy flower heads nestled amidst flowing foliage. The high-reliefdetailing is incredibly crisp, casting beautiful shadows against a subtly textured,stippled background. The floral motif beautifully repeats along the sweeping curvesof the pedestal foot, perfectly balancing the design.
HALLMARKS:Stamped on the underside of the base with the authentic William B. Kerr & Co.trademark (the medieval fasces/hatchet symbol), \"STERLING\", and the originalmaker\'s factory pattern number 714.
CONDITION REPORT:Excellent antique condition with wear consistent with age and gentle historic use.No major dents, splits, or repairs. The silver retains a gorgeous luster with anatural, rich patina left in the deep crevices of the floral petals, beautifullyhighlighting the three-dimensional artwork.
