Some products earn their reputation. The Chord Mojo 2 is oneof the most awarded portable DACs ever made, and this Gen 2 revision makes itmore practical than ever, adding a 4.4mm headphone output and USB-C chargingwhile keeping the sound that built its name.

Unlike nearly every competitor, Chord doesn't use anoff-the-shelf DAC chip. The Mojo 2 runs Chord's own custom FPGA design, aprocessor programmed from scratch for audio conversion. The measured resultsare remarkable for any DAC, let alone a portable one. Distortion is 0.0003%.Dynamic range is 125dB, and output impedance is a near-zero 0.06 ohms.

It plays PCM up to 32-bit and 768kHz, and DSD256 as well. Itdrives headphones from sensitive in-ears right up to 800-ohm studio models,with 600mW into 30 ohms on tap.

Each output also remembers its own volume and its ownsettings. Switching between one pair of headphones and another never brings avolume surprise, which matters more in practice than it sounds on paper.

EQ Without the Quality Loss

Most digital EQ trades away resolution. The Mojo 2's UHD DSPis different. It is a lossless, 104-bit processing system. It adjusts fourbands, lower bass, mid bass, lower treble and high treble, in 18 steps each,and it does so with no loss of detail at all.

You can tune bright headphones down, or add bass weight tolean ones, then store the setting. A crossfeed function blends the channelsslightly. That makes headphone listening feel more like speakers in a room.

Controls run through Chord's signature polychromaticbuttons, glowing spheres whose colors show volume, input, and EQ status. Thecase is CNC-milled aircraft-grade aluminum, made in England, and the whole unitweighs just 185 grams.

Battery life runs to better than eight hours on a charge.The Gen 2 revision's USB-C port now handles both charging and audio data,through a single cable rather than the two it used to need.
