THE STORY — BETWEEN TWO GREAT EMPIRES
After the Tang dynasty fell in AD 907, China entered an age of divided kingdoms and rapidly changing courts. Rulers struggled to establish their authority, while ordinary people continued the essential work of buying food, trading goods, and sustaining their households.
Coins bring those two worlds together. An emperor’s reign title could travel far beyond his court, passing through markets and communities in the form of a small piece of money.
The inscription 天成元寶—Tian Cheng Yuan Bao—is historically associated with the Tiancheng era of Li Siyuan, Emperor Mingzong of the Later Tang. Its name recalls one of the short-lived regimes that occupied the turbulent interval between the great Tang and Song empires.
For a collector building a chronological journey through Chinese history, this inscription opens a window onto a period often overshadowed by the dynasties before and after it.
