Compiled by Florence Wheelock Ayscough and printed by the Oriental Press in Shanghai, the catalogue records ancient and modern works attributed to masters of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The cover title is also printed in Chinese.The catalogue is a significant artifact of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition and of early twentieth-century Chinese art collecting, display, and interpretation in the United States. The China Pavilion was a major component of the exposition; the Chinese Republic participated with a substantial pavilion incorporating a pagoda, formal gateway, teahouses, and a replica of Beijing’s Hall of Supreme Harmony.The exhibition’s dispersal history makes the catalogue especially useful for provenance research. In 1916, the Fifth Avenue sale Rooms issued a related sale catalogue of ancient and modern Chinese paintings that had been exhibited at the Chinese Pavilion during the exposition.
