Ca. 1795 District Of Columbia Washington City Canal Lottery Ticket PMG AU55 Serial #3197 3rd Lottery.
PMG Notes, internal split, pinholes.
A lottery ticket signed by Daniel Carroll of Duddington, Maryland, a signer of both the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. He was a cousin of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Carroll was associated with a business enterprise that intended to link the East with the West by means of a Potomac River canal. He died on July 5, 1796. The lottery ticket says the canal was to be cut through the \"City of Washington to the Eastern-Branch Harbour.\" Every facet of the embossing is completely punched through to the back.
