My state, New Mexico, is the "Radiation Capital of the USA." During themining era, 1950 to 1989, more uranm was mined here than at the 49 otherstates, combined. The center of this mining activity has been at JurassicCanyon, 18 miles NW from Grants NM. This mineral field is the USA'srichest, and it is the fourth richest in the entire world. Since 2014I have had 18 three-to-fiveday"rockhounding" trips to that canyon,carrying this geiger counter orothers. I havealso hadseven otherthree-to-five dayrockhounding trips to Uravan Colorado, and onefive-day rock-collectingtrip to Lisbon Valley,Utah. (1) THREE MANUALS PROVIDED:These are photocopies of the 8 page Ludlum 44-9manual for the pancake probe, the 39-pagemanual for the Model 2-1 Survey geiger counterand the 11-page manual, G-M Pancake Detectors,published in 2005 in the RSO Geiger Magazine.
(2) PANCAKE PROBE: We geiger rock-hounds have a slogan, "Once you've gonepancake, you'll never go back." In mymany expeditions to the Jurassic Canyonrock field, I ALWAYS use a pancake probebecause of its high sensitivity to all threetypes of radiation: alpha / beta / gamma.The Ludlum 44-9 Pancake probe sets thestandard for the entire rockhound geigermovement.

Inthis geiger, the batteries last a long time,provided that the "Rock Hound" remembersto shut the power off when finished searchingthe nearby environment for more rocks!
(7) BNC SOCKET / PLUG: Extra cableswith low-cost BNC-BNC connectors are widelyavailable for this geiger. (By contrast, many otherLudlum geigers often use "Ludlum-C" cables thatcost up to $60.00 each when bought from Ludlum.)
The geiger-cable socket directly accepts a Ludlum-Cplug, and an adapter is included: Ludlum-C to BNC.This adapter conveniently allows you to use EITHERa BNC cable, OR an expensive Ludlum-C cable withyour Model Two geiger counter !YOU WILL RECEIVE two BNC-BNC cables: one withshort length 3ft, and the other with longer 6 ft.length. I myself, prefer the shorter length whenhunting for rocks. The core of these cables is asolid copper wire, so with heavy use at the geigerfield, each cable will last approximatelytwo years.
(8) FULLY CALIBRATED: My tuning device isthe Ludlum Model 500: "the Cadillac of geigercalibrators." (Ludlum's price for this device,if purchased new, is now $5,415.00.) Calibrationensures thatthe geiger's readings are accurate.
(9) FOUR VINYL PROBE-COVERS.These probe-covers are needed because the thinmica membrane on the 44-9 probe's sensor couldbe ruined by any object that penetrates the sensor'smetal screen: pebbles, tiny sticks, insects, or evena blade of straw. Why four? Just like camera lens-covers, the vinyl probe-covers are easily lost whilecollecting rocks at a remote rustic environment !
(10) PROTECTIVE AIRTIGHT PLASTIC CASEINCLUDED FOR THE PANCAKE PROBEPancake geiger probes are the BEST type for field work;they are sensitive to all three types of radiation: ALPHA,BETA, and GAMMA. (11) SELLER IS AN EXPERIENCE HOBBIESTI suspect that 60% of geigers offered at are sold byinexperienced amateurs who obtainedtheir geigers atclearance sales,thrift shops, yard sales or local fleamarkets; many have never used their geigers in thefield. BEWARE when the ad declares that the offeredgeiger is "untested, no returns." This really means thatthe other seller KNOWS that their geiger is a nonworkingpiece of junk! Instead, buy your geiger from MY ADS;I have used these geigers many times in recent yearsat the Jurassic Canyon mineral field, 60 miles frommy New Mexico home. When I certify that the geigercounter in my ad works well, then it truly does!SHIPPING: BY SURFACE UPS ONLY !A problem with the USPS Post Office isthat they will put a parcel on a cargo plane forfree, if the plane has empty space available.This ensures that pancake geiger probeswith a fragile mica membrane will bedestroyed by thin air at high altitude ifcarried above 8,000 ft altitude. Twice inthe past I sent geiger counters by USPSground, but the expensive ($150.00) LND# 7311 geiger sensor in the pancakeprobe was destroyed because the postoffice shipped by air, NOT by ground. This ground-only restriction also meansthat this geiger CANNOT ship to any foreigncountry because overseas travel now meansinternational airborne travel via cargo jet.
A year ago, December 2024, I got excited bya geology research article about uranm possiblyfound at Hawaii's eight natural volcanoes.
