It is exceptionally rare for a François Gaultier (FG) Bébé features a distinct molded tongue or tongue tip. While closed mouths with defined lip outlines are standard for Gaultier, a 3D molded tongue within the mouth gap is a premium sculpting detail found in only a small fraction of production. One to two percent were ever made with this feature !!
Standard vs. Rare Sculpting: The vast majority of FG heads feature a traditional closed mouth with a painted central accent line, or occasionally an open-closed mouth with painted upper teeth. A dimensional, molded tongue tip sitting between slightly parted lips is an intentional, high-detail variation.
Associated Models & Eras: This feature appears almost exclusively on early block-letter pressings (marked F. #. G., circa 1880–1884) and a select few early scroll-mark pressings (F.G. in a cartouche).
Mold & Finishing Factors: Because bisque head pressings relied on plaster molds that wore down over time, delicate high-relief details like a tiny tongue tip quickly lost definition. Damp finishing and smoothing prior to firing also erased or softened the tongue definition on many heads from the same run.
Collector & Market Significance: In major doll sales (such as Theriault's), a "closed mouth with tiny tongue-tip" is explicitly highlighted as a key Value Point. It elevates an FG Bébé into an elite tier of desirable French bisque dolls, similar to the premium placed on molded tongues in early Bru or Schmitt models.
