The cover is the star of this copy. Against a deep red cloth binding, a richly colored illustration shows a crowned princess beside a fountain, her flowing robes and gilded details glowing against the dark woodland scene. It has the look and presence that makes an old children’s book just as enjoyable to display as it is to read.
This is a circa 1928 Saalfield Publishing Company edition of The Red Fairy Book, edited by Andrew Lang. The date is an estimate based on comparable Saalfield copies; the photographed pages do not show a publication year. The title page credits H. J. Ford and Lancelot Speed for the book’s numerous black and white illustrations.
Inside are tales of enchantment, danger, and clever escapes, including “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” “The Enchanted Pig,” “Rapunzel,” “The Golden Goose,” and “The Story of Sigurd.” Turn a page and you’re back in the era when an illustrated storybook was something a child might treasure, reread, and keep on the shelf for years.
