A set of three original antique chromolithograph plates of British wildflowers from W. J. Gordon\'s Our Country\'s Flowers and How to Know Them, illustrated by John Allen and published in London by Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., about 1895.
Each sheet packs dozens of small numbered wildflowers into the dense, tapestry-like composite arrangement late-Victorian field guides used to get a whole family of plants onto a single page. Hung together as a trio they read as one continuous meadow. The colour is true chromolithography, printed from a separate stone for each ink, which is why the greens stay fresh and the pinks have not faded the way a hand-coloured sheet of the same age often has.
This set is Plates 8, 9, 18. Plate 8 is wild roses and blackthorn, blush pink and white with blue sloes. Plate 9 is ros willowherb and a great yellow evening primrose. Plate 18 fills out with pink and mauve. The most immediately decorative trio in the run.
Original antique chromolithographs, not reproductions. Sold as a set of three. Sheets measure 7.5 x 5 in (19 x 12.5 cm). Condition good: clean, bright sheets with light age-toning toward the edges, as expected of plates removed from a bound volume. Shipped flat and well protected.
