Antique c. 1820s European Folk Art Gouache — \"Anblick von den Adersbacher Felsen\"
Translated as, “ View of the Adersbach Rock Formations”Overview:Offered for sale is a captivating, authentic early 19th-century primitive gouache painting depicting an historic travel scene in the famous Adersbach-Weckelsdorfer Felsenstadt (the historic sandstone rock labyrinth located in modern-day Czech Republic, near the German border). This self-taught, unsigned work of art captures a fascinating, specific piece of European cultural history: testing the famous Adersbach Echo. The scene depicts three men among the towering sandstone cliffs. One of the figures in civilian garb is actively firing a flintlock musket to witness the rolling, natural seven-fold echo effect. He is accompanied by an observing companion and a man dressed in an early 1800s regional military uniform complete with a Napoleonic-style bi-corner hat, who stands by as part of the touring group.Medium & Visual Attributes:The artwork is executed in an early, opaque gouache on paper, exhibiting the classic velvety, matte, and chalky texture characteristic of the Biedermeier period. The pigment application is remarkably stable, beautifully preserving the deep, rich colors of the figures\' attire and the surrounding sandstone structures. Provenance & Inscriptions:This piece carries an exceptional, multi-generational provenance trail that heavily appeals to historical collectors:1. Original 19th-Century Inscription:The reverse side of the paper features a meticulously drawn ink-line rectangle framing a hand-calligraphed catalog number and the centered German dative title: “Anblick von den Adersbacher Felsen\". This elegant cataloging indicates the piece was historically part of an organized, wealthy private estate library, travel album, or art cabinet (*Kunstkammer*).2. 20th-Century Estate Provenance: The accompanying vintage wooden frame backboard (circa 1930s) features a prominent, authentic German handwritten ownership inscription reading: \"Eigentum Friedel Glaeser\" (Property of Friedel Glaeser). This verifies a long history of careful preservation within a private German family collection.Frame & Matting:Frame: Included. Narrow vintage wooden frame matching the age of the backboard (c. 1930s-40’s). Original Mat:Vintage window mat board (c. 1950s) (the darker mat in the photos).Note: To guarantee the preservation of this early 19th-century paper work, the painting has been carefully removed from direct contact with the acidic mid-century backing materials and will ship securely sandwiched between, acid-free archival tissue paper, mat material and glassine sheet. The original frame, mat, and inscribed backboard are all fully intact and included in this listing as an unseparated historical ensemble.Condition Notes:The painting is in authentic, unrestored antique condition. There is a noticeable, historic water stain (tide-line ring) in the upper right corner within the clouds and sky area. There is some paper buckling across the top edge and can be pressed flat. The vintage frame has condition issues. In two corners, the face veneer is chipped. In one corner, the miter has a slight gap. Please note: This type of water blemish is routinely and easily restored. This is a typical surface blemish for antique works of this age on paper and does not detract from the still bright and rich color of the scene, the primary figures or the structural integrity of the paint film. Please review the high-resolution photographs to inspect the margins, the paint texture, and the clear provenance script on the reverse backboard.Global Shipping & Handling:We welcome international collectors. This item is fully eligible for international shipping, with secure delivery to Germany and the wider European Union via the International Shipping Program. To ensure the delicate gouache pigment is perfectly protected during transit, the painting will be covered with acid-free glassine paper to prevent any surface friction or static exposure before being securely sandwiched in a sturdy shipping box.The framing glass is not included in order to prevent shattering glass.Adersbach, Adršpach, Adršpašské skály, Biedermeier, Volkskunst, Echobläser, Militär Uniform, Sudeten, Landscape Gouache, 19th Century German Art, Grand Tour Souvenir, Glaeser Provenienz, Bohemia, Böhmen, Teplice nad Metují, Antique European Folk Art, Primitive Watercolor, Opaque Tempera, Estate Find.
