Very interesting early machinist / industrial measuring tool from an old estate.
This is a mechanical speed indicator, designed by William Lang of Brooklyn, New York and covered by U.S. Patent No. 268,107, dated November 28, 1882.
The back of this example is clearly stamped:
PAT. NOV. 28. 82
The instrument has a double-ended pointed spindle, exposed gearing and two graduated counting wheels. The original design was intended to measure/count the revolutions of rotating machinery and could be used with shafts rotating in either direction.
An example of this same patented William Lang speed indicator is documented in the collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
Condition:
Antique used condition with age-related wear, scratches, discoloration, oxidation and finish loss as shown. The gears, numbered wheels, spindle and mechanical components are present as pictured.
I acquired this from an estate and have not tested it for accuracy or proper operation, so it is being sold as an antique collectible tool in its present condition. I have not cleaned, polished or restored it.
