Antique Thackeray Works Set Continental Press 20th Century Club Pittsburgh For Sale

Antique early-20th-century multi-volume set of the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, published by The Continental Press of New York, Cambridge, and Chicago. This is the publisher’s decorative Author’s Edition, with ornate illustrated title pages and numerous full-page plates.
The set includes major Thackeray titles such as Vanity Fair, The Virginians, The Adventures of Philip, Roundabout Papers, The Paris Sketch Book, The Irish Sketch Book, and others. The interior pages are a real strength: they remain unusually clean, bright, and attractive for their age, with crisp decorative printing and illustrated plates.
Twentieth Century Club provenance: This set has an association with Pittsburgh’s historic Twentieth Century Club, including an interior illustration of the Club’s Oakland clubhouse. Founded in Pittsburgh in 1894, the Club was established by women as a center for literature, the arts, science, civic engagement, and public service. That Pittsburgh institutional connection gives the set added local-history interest beyond a standard decorative Thackeray collection.
Condition: Interior pages and plates are in very good antique condition overall, with light age toning and occasional handling wear. The exterior bindings, however, need significant restoration. The cloth and leather-style spine panels show extensive peeling, losses, rubbing, staining, fraying, and exposed areas. Spine titles are incomplete or missing on several volumes. One volume is missing its front cover entirely. Bindings should be treated as fragile and are best suited to a collector, rebinding project, or decorative-library restoration.
