Wonderful antique Swedish / Scandinavian bentwood travel chest, constructed from bent and joined wood with extensive hand-forged iron strapping and fittings.
The chest features an oval/bentwood form with heavy iron reinforcement, riveted edging, hinges, lock hardware and decorative ironwork.
The lid is particularly attractive, with hand-incised concentric circular decoration and a distinctive carved central symbol or owner’s mark.
Similar Swedish bentwood travel chests with hand-forged ironwork are commonly attributed to the 18th through early 19th century. Exact age and regional origin of this particular chest have not been independently authenticated.

This chest came from a collection containing numerous older Swedish, Finnish and Scandinavian knives and related objects. The knives and other contents are not included in this sale (but they are listedseperately).
The chest has deliberately not been cleaned, refinished or restored, preserving its wonderful old surface, iron patina and character.
A striking piece of early Scandinavian folk art with tremendous decorative presence.

This is an old, heavily used object and shows considerable wear consistent with its apparent age, including:
Surface scratches, marks and discoloration
Cracks and age-related movement in the wood
