Antique Roycroft Hammered Copper Serving Tray Early Mark Arts & Crafts c1906-10
Exceptional antiqueRoycroft hand-hammered copper serving tray, featuring a large circular form, applied hand-forged handles and the distinctiveearly Roycroft orb-and-cross maker's mark.
Dating approximately to theearly 20th century, this handsome tray is a wonderful example of American Arts & Crafts metalwork. The substantial copper body has a broad raised rim surrounding a recessed serving surface, with visible hand-hammering throughout. Two forged copper handles are attached with prominent hammered rivets, adding to its handcrafted character.
The copper has developed a beautiful, deepbrown and bronze natural patinawith variations in tone across the surface. It hasnot been aggressively polished, retaining the aged appearance highly desirable in period Arts & Crafts copper.
Roycroft Early Maker's Mark
The reverse bears the distinctiveRoycroft orb-and-cross maker's markassociated with the Roycroft Shops of East Aurora, New York.
Of particular interest is the form of the“R” within the orb, which displays the characteristiccurled or curved tailassociated with early Roycroft shopmarks.
Based on commonly referenced Roycroft mark chronologies, this early form is generally associated with approximately1906–1910. As with all Roycroft shopmark dating, the date should be regarded as approximate because punches could overlap in their periods of use.
The absence of the later“ROYCROFT”name beneath the orb-and-cross is also consistent with an earlier period of production.
The Roycroft Arts & Crafts Tradition
The Roycroft community was founded byElbert Hubbard in East Aurora, New York in 1895and became one of the most important centers of the American Arts & Crafts movement.
Roycroft artisans produced furniture, books, leatherwork and hand-worked metal objects emphasizing traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of functional design.
The famousorb-and-cross insigniabecame the identifying symbol of the Roycroft Shops and remains an important feature for collectors of original Roycroft work.

Condition
Good antique condition,commensurate with age and use.
The tray retains a rich, naturally aged patina with considerable variation in color and surface character. There are numerous scratches and scuffs to the serving surface and underside, along with oxidation, spotting, discoloration and other signs of age and use.
The outer edge is slightly irregular in areas, consistent with its handmade construction and years of use. The photographs also show age-related surface wear around the handle attachments and rivets.
No attempt has been made to aggressively clean or polish the copper.The aged surface and patina have intentionally been preserved.
Please examine all photographs carefully, including the close-up of theRoycroft maker's mark, handles, rivets and surface, as they are an important part of the condition description.
Collector Appeal
This is a wonderful example ofearly American Arts & Crafts copperworkwith many of the characteristics collectors look for in Roycroft metalwork: substantial hand-hammered construction, forged handles, exposed hammered rivets, a rich untouched patina and, most importantly, the desirableearly-style Roycroft maker's mark.
At approximately 15 1/2" in diameter before the handles, it also has excellent visual presence and would display beautifully in anArts & Crafts, Mission, Craftsman or Roycroft collection.
