Before modern adhesives existed, highly prized family heirlooms were saved by itinerant china menders who hand-bored tiny slots into the back of the porcelain and bound the fracture using hand-forged metal staples. Because this practice faded out by the 1930s, this fine German porcelain plate was likely repaired very soon after it was purchased new.
The front showcases Rosenthal's famous "Pompadour" scalloped shape with a vibrant canary-yellow border and floral bouquet. The repair is so expertly done that the front face aligns beautifully.
