An antique pre-1907 postcard of City Hall in Norwich, Connecticut, published by E.A. Bardol & Co. of Norwich. The front shows the Second Empire–style brick City Hall with its clock tower, mansard roof, and columned entry porch, printed in soft color against a pale aqua sky. The caption \"City Hall, Norwich, Conn.\" is printed in red below the image, and \"Published by E.A. Bardol & Co.\" runs up the left margin.
This card has an undivided back, from the era when the address side could carry only the address. The message is written in the white space under the picture on the front, in period script:
\"Thursday morning. Dear E. How do you all do. Haven\'t heard from you lately. We are both well. Just now I am entertaining Mrs. Hill from Middletown. With love, Aunt M.\"
It was mailed to Miss Elizabeth Raymond, Elmwood, Conn., with a green 1¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp (Series 1902). It carries a New London, Conn. flag machine cancel dated February 1, 1906, 2:30 PM. February 1, 1906 fell on a Thursday, which matches the date in the message. A second circular postmark shows on the front. This is a nice early Connecticut piece for collectors of Norwich or New London County history, Victorian architecture, Connecticut postal history, or flag cancels.
Measures approximately 3 1/4\" wide.
Condition:Used, with honest wear for a card that is 120 years old. The left edge on the picture side has chipping and roughness along its full length, and there is a small tear and roughness along the top right edge on the address side. A light crease runs through the sky in the upper left of the image. The corners show wear, and faint diagonal toning marks near the left corners on the back suggest the card was once kept in an album. Colors are still bright, and the stamp and cancels are clear.
