Antique engraved view of Regensburg, Germany, after Matthäus Merian’s celebrated 1644 depiction of the city and its historic Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) spanning the Danube.
The detailed scene shows the fortified city of Regensburg, the medieval stone bridge and its towers, boats and figures on the Danube, and the surrounding Bavarian landscape.
The lower margin is printed:
“Regensburg: Die Steinerne Brücke über die Donau”
and
“Aus Matthaeus Merians Topographia Bavariae 1644”
This is a later antique impression/reproduction of Merian’s 1644 work, not an original 1644 printing. Based on the paper, printing characteristics and presentation, it appears to date to the late 19th or early 20th century.
A visible impressed plate boundary surrounds the engraved image, consistent with intaglio printing.
Overall framed size: approximately 14.5" x 11.5".
Presented under glass with matting in an older wood frame. Original-style paper backing and hanging hardware remain on the reverse.
Condition:
Very good antique condition overall. The engraving retains strong contrast and exceptionally fine architectural and figural detail. Paper and framing show age-related toning and wear. The reverse backing shows wear, including losses along the edges and later tape near the hanger. Please review photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
