Antique Marshall Wells Zenith No Z26 Transitional Jack Plane Sargent 15\" For Sale

Excellent early antique Marshall-Wells Hardware Co. No. Z26 transitional jack plane, measuring approximately 15 inches long.

The wooden body is clearly factory marked on the end with the distinctive Marshall-Wells sunburst emblem, No. Z26 and:

Marshall-Wells Hardware Co. was a major American hardware distributor and sold an extensive line of private-label tools. Its well-known Zenith line included hand planes manufactured for the company by established tool makers, with Marshall-Wells Zenith planes generally attributed to Sargent.

This is a classic transitional plane, combining the traditional hardwood body and tote of an earlier wooden plane with the adjustable iron frog, cutter and hardware associated with later metal bench planes.

The plane retains its shaped wooden rear tote, round wooden front knob, iron frog and adjustment mechanism, lever cap and cutter assembly. The contrasting wood and black-finished iron hardware give it an especially attractive early tool appearance.

Good antique as-found condition with expected wear from age and use, including scratches, finish wear, oxidation, discoloration and other surface wear. Crack in wood near end. See last image. The wooden body, tote and knob show an attractive aged surface and patina.

The original Marshall-Wells markings remain visible on the end of the wooden body. Metal components show age-related oxidation and wear.

This plane has not been restored or refinished. It is being offered in its present as-found condition. No attempt has been made to sharpen, tune or otherwise prepare the plane for woodworking use.
