Antique Late 17th / 18th Century Bronze Mortar and Pestle ~ Relief Molded Cross For Sale

Seller: Alley-Antiques DESCRIPTION: Antique Primitive Bronze. This is a scarce late 17th to early 18th century bronze mortar and pestle. Late 1600s to early 1700s. Fabulous original darkened patina. Has original pestle. Heavy. Has a primitive relief molding on front and back that are hard to see what it is. Near the top of the front and back there is a small cross. This was probably used for herbs and such in an apothecary or religious healing monastery. Antique. Over 300 years old. Very nice condition for age. Original mortar and matching pestle. Original darkened unpolished patina. No chips or cracks. Very worn and used. There are 5 small cast iron pins added to bottom of bronze mortar (pounded flat) probable to add stability or fix wear areas (probably done 150+ years ago). There were 2 holes on outer rim to probable help pin this to a wood surface when in use. There is a slight wobble where it is not fully flat from years of use. This is a scarce very very old bronze mortar and pestle with a great look. Measures about 5\" tall and the upper rim is about 5 3/4\" in diameter not including handles. Very heavy for size.
