ANTIQUE KENNEBEC BOAT AND CANOE COMPANY DISPLAY MODEL
MAINE, CA. 1920
DIMENSIONS
About 27 1/2\" x 4 3/4\" x 1 3/4\"
DESCRIPTION
An outstanding display canoe model, often referred to as a salesman\'s sample, probably built by the Kennebec Boat and Canoe Company of Waterville, Maine. Hand painted gold and maroon lettering on both gunwales reads \"KENNEBEC,\" matching the branding font and style that the company used in its advertising material. Intricately detailed model featuring ribbed construction, longitudinal planking, carved thwarts, webbed mesh seats, and wooden mahogany deck pieces. Built exactly like a full-size wood-and-canvas antique canoe from the 1920s.Acquired at an estate / antique sale in central Maine.
Kennebec only built an estimated 60 factory display samples total, mostly between 1916 and 1926, in a variety of sizes, most of which were larger than this one. It is possible that it was built by someone, perhaps a Kennebec employee, in homage to the Kennebec canoes.
