Loose illustrated plate from one of the 6 volumes of fish in the 40 volumes of the Naturalist\'s Library published between 1833 and 1843.The books were edited by Sir William Jardine and engraved and published by W.H. Lizars.
The Naturalist\'s Library was the first illustrated natural history made for a middle class public, who could purchase the volumes that especially interested them. The hand coloring was, as was common at the time, done by women at home.
