The name hogscraper comes from its strong visual resemblance to a metal farm tool used by butchers to scrape the bristles of a hog\'s hide. These candlesticks were used as a lighting device in everyday households from 1780 to 1860. They were a very popular primitive lighting fixture in the 19th century in North America and Britain. The push-up tab (thumb ejector) still works, and it has a wonderful worn surface from many decades of use. The chair hook is missing from this candlestick. It measures about 8 inches tall and has a diameter of 4 1/2 inches at the bottom.
