A fine late 19th century French hand-painted porcelain plaque by Antoine Soustre, a noted French porcelain painter and enamelist closely associated with the artistic tradition of Limoges.
The plaque depicts an elegant classical young woman with a bird, after a composition by Belgian painter Diana Coomans (1861–1952), traditionally known as Lesbia with Her Sparrow. Finely painted in rich polychrome enamels with delicate gilt highlights.
Signed “A. Soustre” and inscribed “d’après Mlle Coomans” lower right.
Soustre was known for finely painted porcelain and enamel works produced in the Limoges tradition. Examples of his work are represented in museum collections, including the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, and collections associated with Limoges.
Presented in its original carved giltwood frame with scrolling foliate and floral decoration and blue-painted inner surround.
