This stunning fruit engraving is from Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's "Traità des arbres fruitiers [.] Nouvelle à dition, augmentà e d'un grand nombre d'espà ces de fruits obtenus des progràs de la culture, par A. Poiteau et P.J.F. Turpin".
The work was first published in 1768, with later editions printed from around 1808- 1835.
The work described and illustrated almonds, peaches, nectarines, grapes, many kinds of berries, pears, and apples. --- The engravings were completed by Victor, Bouquet, Gabriel, Giraud, and others. They were printed by Langlois, as this is, in the early 1800’s.
Each engraving was printed then hand-finished with colored inks or watercolor. The engravings were completed after orignal illustrations by Antoine Poiteau & Pierre-Jean-Francois Turpin. Antoine Poiteau was a pupil of Pierre Joseph-Redoute and was trained as a botanist. Pierre-Jean-François Turpin was a self-taught artist that published a number of his own works. ---
This plate was framed and displayed for years, and shows significant yellowing to the paper and a darkening of the paper defining the window mat that originally surrounded the work. Hand colored, and the colors appear slightly muted. The print was trimmed from its original size to 13.25” across x 16 3/8” long. Nicely impressed plate mark measuring 10.25” x 13 1/8”. The darker burn around where the image was matted by a previous owner measures 11 x 13.75. The rear has brown paper tape bordering the edge where it had been taped into the matte and some discoloration in areas where the hand painting occurred on the front.
