Engraved portrait of Elisabeth Fry (1780-1845), English Quaker minister and prison reformer, with the printed title ELISABETH FRY below the image. The portrait is presented within a printed or separately applied pink-tinted mount. No engraver, publisher, or publication title is visible on the face of the sheet; the reverse should be examined for additional information. Sheet approximately 11 and one-quarter by 8 inches.
Elizabeth Fry, born Elizabeth Gurney, was one of the best-known British social reformers of the nineteenth century. After visiting London\'s Newgate Prison in 1813, she organized sustained efforts to improve sanitation, education, and humane treatment for incarcerated women. She became a prominent public advocate for penal reform throughout Britain and Europe. The portrait appeals to collectors of Quaker history, women\'s history, nineteenth-century social reform, criminal justice history, and British portrait engraving.
Condition: Good to fair antique condition. The portrait and printed title are complete and retain good engraved detail. The white portrait field shows scattered yellow-brown foxing and small stains, most visibly at the right and lower areas. The pink mount has mild fading, surface soiling, a few tiny marks, and light edge wear. Corners are slightly softened with minor rippling or waviness to the sheet. No major tears or losses visible in the portrait area.
