The bottle originally contained Fluid Extract No. 510 – Yerba Santa Aromatic, a concentrated preparation intended for making syrup. Yerba Santa was historically used in pharmaceutical preparations, including as a flavoring agent to help disguise the bitterness of medicines such as quinine. Eli Lilly was offering Yerba Santa preparations by the late 19th century. vLex
