Antique original oil on canvas by Arthur Lumley (1837–1912), New York, titled An Arab Advance.

The composition depicts a mounted Arab horseman carrying a long rifle, with additional mounted figures appearing in the distant landscape. Richly rendered in deep burgundy, ochre, cream, violet and green, with detailed treatment of the horse, rider and ornamental tack.

Signed Arthur Lumley lower right. The reverse bears period handwritten inscriptions with the artist's name and the title An Arab Advance. Presented in an ornate gilt frame.

Arthur Lumley was born in Dublin and came to the United States as a young child. He studied at the National Academy of Design and became a noted New York artist and illustrator. During the Civil War, he worked as a special artist documenting military campaigns and Union troops.
