Antique 19th-century New York State Geological Survey paleontology volumes with plates, offered as a mixed lot.
Offered as a single lot is a group of original 19th-century scientific volumes from the landmark New York State publication Natural History of New York / Palaeontology of New York, authored by James Hall, Professor of Geology and State Geologist of New York, and a foundational figure in American paleontology.
The lot includes Volumes I, II, III, and V (including Parts I and II of Volume V), along with an additional plates-only volume lacking title or publication information. These works were issued over several decades as part of the New York State Geological Survey, with publication dates ranging from 1847 to 1885. Printing was carried out in Albany, New York, by C. Van Benthuysen and later Charles Van Benthuysen & Sons, the official state printers of the period.
Content focuses on fossil invertebrates and related paleontological research and includes extensive lithographic plates illustrating specimens. As was common for these publications, text and plates were often issued separately; over time, many surviving examples were rebound, separated, or left unbound.
All volumes in this lot are offered strictly as found. Most are lacking original covers and spines, with string-bound or failing bindings, loose and detached pages, and general wear consistent with heavy academic and library use. Library stamps, handwritten notes, and to/from inscriptions are present. The plates-only volume contains illustrations only, with no title page or identifying preliminaries, and cannot be definitively assigned to a specific volume.

Original 19th-century volumes in poor to fair condition. Most volumes are missing covers and spines. Bindings are string-bound and failing, with loose and detached pages. Pages show foxing, edge wear, tears, and age toning. Includes library stamps, handwritten notes, and inscriptions. Plates-only volume lacks title page or publication data. Sold as-is.
