DESCRIPTION
Exceptional antique Nettur Petti Kerala wedding dowry box, with its traditional shape inspired by the pyramidal roofs of the houses in the Malabar province. Used by women of affluent and aristocratic families to contain the bride\'s jewelry, personal possessions and other valuables, a testament to the marital customs of southwest India. Made of painted leather or hide-covered wood, probably teak or jackwood. Elaborate hand forged iron hardware with lock mechanism (no key), trident-form decoration on the lid, bound corners. Interior till compartment with original decoration matching the exterior.
CONDITION
Overall very good antique condition. Structurally sturdy, sound and complete. One hobnail-type stud missing from the front lid. Has the expected age discoloration, and roughage around the edges. Rich, dark metal and wood patina (all visible in the images).
