Hmm. Where do I start? Collectors and would-be collectors, this set warrants a serious look. After checking and re-checking all the research I can find on these early Marx sets, this one is exceptionally complete.
I will start with the minor negatives. There is slight box damage you can see in the photos. And the instructions, the Davy Crockett and the Alamo pamphlet, and Fess Parker photo are quality copies.
Now. Set #3544 was not the first Alamo set released by Marx in 1955. In fact, it’s very difficult to track which included what across these sets. Again, after hours of diving in, this set is exceptionally complete. It is also the first set of 1955 to feature the Mexican army rather than Indian attackers, on the box art and in the box (the Mexican Army figures weren’t ready to ship when Marx wanted to rush to get in on the Crockett tidal wave of popularity). Marx continued to release more Alamo sets with different model numbers and slightly different contents.
And the box features the Walt Disney Logo and the “Fess Parker as Davy Crockett” name; also on the Alamo gate.
After checking and re-checking, my set #3544 has everything it was shipped with. Let’s start with the Mexican Army. Molded in metallic blue with their Shako headgear, you get two sets of 10 soldiers in all the correct poses and duplicates. Plus another set of 10 beige-colored Mexican Army troops in the exact same group of poses. A total of 30 Mexican Army attackers.
Next the cream-color defenders and the silver defenders. Here you get two sets of 10 defenders in the correct poses. A total of 20 Alamo defenders.
On top of those, you get the Disney official Davy Crockett figure with the proof in the base. He isn’t counted as one of the defenders.
The last three photos are better close-ups for all the soldier/defender pieces.
In the group of often broken and/or missing pieces, these are in good shape. You get four cannons with springs intact plus a pile of shells. You also get a group of brown pegs to mount the walkways on the Alamo walls. By the way, all the tin pieces are present and accounted for, in great condition.
Included eight vintage Marx cavalry horses in brown, light gray and cream; published #3544 inventories call for seven horses, so one is included as an extra.
To summarize:

You get the correct #3544 box in good condition, a very substantial, coherent original Marx figure/accessory complement rather than a miscellaneous partial set. A documented #3544 includes the same broad content categories I’ve described—Shako Mexicans, pioneers/cavalrymen, eight horses, cannons, scenery and accessories.
