Antique 1838 Siebold Nippon II Handcolored Lithograph Japan Fortification Framed For Sale

Genuine mid-19th-century hand-colored lithograph after Dr. Philipp Franz von Siebold, from his landmark work on Japan. This is plate \'TAB. XXVI\' from \'NIPPON II,\' captioned in Dutch and German — \'VERSCHANSING. / VERSCHANZUNG.\' — showing two vignettes of Japanese defenses: an artillery battery firing under a rocky headland with warships offshore (upper), and an armored palisade with two archers in traditional dress at the entrance to a hilltop stockade (lower).The lithography is crisp with fine stipple grain (no halftone dots — this is not a modern reproduction), and the original hand-applied watercolor is bright and unfaded: pinks and greens on the armor, red parasols and a teal standard above the palisade. A typed dealer label on the sealed backing reads: \'Scarce lithograph by Nader and Erxleben after Dr. Philip Franz von Siebold. From Siebold\'s Voyage au Japon, exécuté pendant les années 1823 à 1830, Paris, 1838.\' Note the printed caption is bilingual Dutch/German, which is the Leiden \'Nippon\' issue captioning — the plate is from the same body of work Siebold published across both editions.Professionally framed under glass with a cream mat in a slim gilt fillet frame; framer\'s sticker on the back from The Ghent Framer (Akron, OH) noting museum conservation materials were used.Condition: image area appears clean and bright, no visible tears, creases, foxing, or fading.
