Warner Classics (formerly EMI visited Paris in 1958, where recordings of his two piano concertos were made with Kletzkin conducting and Shostakovich himself at the piano.

He also attended the session recording of his Symphony No. 11, which had premiered just the previous year, leaving behind this historic audio source.

It is surprising that this recording was realized in the West before Mravinsky\'s session recording (February 1959), but above all, the tense performance, born from Klyuchant\'s sincere conducting and deep understanding of the music, is captivating even when compared to other recordings.

Moreover, the French orchestra\'s sound at that time was magnificent, and its preservation in stereo recording can be considered miraculous (though some master-related imperfections exist).

For this release, a master digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tape in the home country was used, with separate mastering for the SACD layer and CD layer.

This recording is both historically significant and, until recently, a forgotten treasure.

Originally released in mono, the domestic LP went out of print shortly after its release. However, a stereo version was released overseas in the 1970s.

Even after the advent of the CD era, EMI never released a stereo version. It wasn\'t until 1996 that TESTAMENT suddenly released a stereo version, finally bringing it wider recognition.

However, it\'s somewhat peculiar that the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2, recorded around the same time with Shostakovich as soloist, were only ever released in mono.

From this period, EMI (Pathe Marconi) in France also finally began stereo recordings (Cluytens\' recordings were subsequently released in stereo), suggesting this was a transitional phase.

This particular recording also contained some sections that were partially monaural, and there were issues originating from the master tape, such as one channel dropping out in places. This suggests it may have been somewhat experimental for its time.

Incidentally, the original label finally released a stereo CD version when the box set was issued in 2017.

While the performance itself, conducted under the composer\'s supervision and recorded the year after the premiere, shows some lack of smoothness due to the unfamiliarity of both the conductor and orchestra, the high level of achievement for the time is evident.

Particularly remarkable is the unique timbre of the woodwinds and brass, distinct from Russian orchestras, which undoubtedly adds to the appeal of the sound.

As a highly realistic piece, the technical prowess of both conductor and orchestra significantly impacts the recording\'s quality. In this sense, the fact that they left behind this recording is invaluable.

It is said that Shostakovich himself favored this recording, confirming its status as a precious musical legacy. Consequently, the decision was made to reissue it, aiming to revive the atmosphere of that era for modern listeners even more effectively than previous releases.

Indeed, the heightened tension and intensity are essential elements for performing (recreating) this piece and are crucial.

With the greater prominence of its rich sonic palette and dynamic range, listeners will likely encounter many moments of renewed discovery.
