ANTIQUE 19thC JAPANESE MEIJI (1868-1912) SATSUMA POTTERY BOWL, SAMURAI AND ONI
Description:
An antique Japanese satsuma decorated pottery bowl with superbly fine decoration,dating to the Meiji period (1868-1912),late 19th Century.
The surface decoration depicts a young nobleman draped in a phoenix feather cloak (hagoromo), conversing with a demon (Oni) to his right side. Both figures and the feather cape are painted in exceptional detail on a gold stippled and cream glazed ground.
The upper rim is decorated with a band of geometric \'zigzags\' in gold on a red ground, together with asymmetric triangular panels enclosing chrysanthemums and circular mons on regular geometric backgrounds.
The outer surface of the bowl has been painted with flowers and butterflies, together with similar triangular panels. The lower section of the bowl is painted with a band of chrysanthemums and stylised cloud forms.
The base of the bowl is signed with a three character mark in gold.
Background:
The production of Satsumapottery dates back to the 16th century, and is still produced today in southernJapan around the Kagoshima region.
Painstakingly hand paintedwith beautifully detailed decoration in gilt and various polychrome enamels(moriage), the fine crackling (Kannyu) of the soft, creamy glaze is typical andwas used more to give richness and depth to the colours. The enamel and gildingis applied on top of the glaze so that it stands proud of the surface.
The best Satsuma ceramic artistsdecorated their work freehand, often using a single rat’s hair to achieve thefinest detail.
