Start each spark plug by hand first. Do not use a tool to force the first threads. - If the spark plug does not turn smoothly, stop and recheck alignment to avoid cylinder head thread damage.
- Tighten spark plugs to the factory torque specification for your vehicle.
- Push each coil down firmly until the boot is fully seated on the spark plug.
- Make sure the coil connector clicks into place and is not loose or oil-contaminated.
- After installation, clear old trouble codes and test drive the vehicle before checking again.
If You Still Have a Misfire
A misfire is not always caused only by the coil or spark plug. If the same code returns after installation, check these items before assuming the new part is bad:
Swap the coil to another cylinder and see whether the misfire follows the coil. - Inspect the coil connector and wiring harness for broken locks, corrosion, or loose pins.
- Check for oil or water inside the spark plug well.
- Check the fuel injector if the misfire stays on the same cylinder.
- Check compression if the cylinder continues to misfire after ignition parts are replaced.
- Check for vacuum leaks, intake leaks, or old stored codes that were not cleared.
