31x 1862-71 U.S. 5c Internal Revenue Stamps R23-R27 R137 Civil War Tax For Sale

Offered here is a large collection of 31 vintage United States 5-cent Internal Revenue stamps, primarily from the 1862-1871 First Issue Revenue series, along with one later Second Issue revenue stamp.

This assortment contains several different documentary tax classifications used during the Civil War-era federal revenue program, including Agreement, Certificate, Express and Inland Exchange stamps.

The lot is believed to include approximately:

5x Agreement, Scott R23 family
15x Certificate, Scott R24 family
4x Express, Scott R25 family
6x Inland Exchange, Scott R27 family
1x 1871 Second Issue 5¢ Revenue, believed Scott R137

The First Issue 5¢ designs are cataloged as red, although the examples in this collection display a wide range of aged red, orange, salmon, rose and brownish shades.

A particularly interesting aspect of this lot is the wide assortment of period manuscript cancellations, including dates, initials, signatures and other handwritten markings. These cancellations were part of the normal use of documentary revenue stamps and give the group plenty of variety for a revenue or cancellation collector.

All stamps are used and sold exactly as pictured.

Condition varies throughout the collection and may include centering differences, shortened or missing perforations, staining, fading, toning, manuscript ink, creases, thins, paper wear, hinge remnants, gum disturbance and other faults associated with stamps of this age.

Several examples have notably strong or attractive manuscript cancellations, while others are lightly cancelled.

These stamps have not been professionally graded, certified or expertized. Scott identifications are believed accurate based on the visible designs, but paper varieties and suffixes have not been verified.
