Joe Vollan is a Seattle-born contemporary artist known for dark narrative work combining folklore, fairy-tale imagery, anthropomorphic animals, skeletal figures, natural forms, gothic humor, and invented characters. His distinctive style has been described as “doom-folk,” and he has exhibited extensively with Arch Enemy Arts.
Vollan also has a direct connection to tabletop gaming culture. Card Kingdom has issued Magic: The Gathering game tokens featuring artwork by Joe Vollan, and Mox Boarding House in Seattle has featured hand-painted artwork by Vollan within its gaming spaces.
The work bears Vollan’s distinctive JV monogram with a small red heart and the Roman numeral XIV, indicating 2014.
The painting was acquired at sale, where the Vollan lot was cataloged as Agnes Dreams of Falling Flowers. Subsequent research established that Vollan’s documented painting of that title is a different 2018 work, so that title has not been applied here.
No title or additional identifying inscription is present on the verso.
