2005 NORFED Liberty $20 1 oz Silver Type II Long Hair Lock Turkey Day Pre-FBI:
$220.00

Own a genuine piece of American monetary history — a 2005 NORFED $20 Liberty Dollar struck in one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

This is the Type II (long hair lock) variety, catalog #15.

Why This 2005 Stands Out in NORFED History:

NORFED (National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve and the Internal Revenue Code) was founded in 1998 by Bernard von NotHaus as a private, voluntary, silver-backed alternative currency. The goal was simple and radical: give people real money with intrinsic value that the Federal Reserve could not inflate away.

From 1998 through November 24, 2005 the base was $10 Liberty Dollars = 1 oz silver. As silver prices climbed, von NotHaus and the Regional Currency Officers prepared for the inevitable adjustment. On Thanksgiving Day — November 25, 2005 (“Turkey Day Exchange”) — the base officially moved to $20 = 1 oz silver. Old $10-base pieces could be exchanged for the new $20 pieces (plus a small re-minting fee). Demand exploded. The first stock of 2005 $20 rounds (Type I / short hair lock, catalog #14) was rapidly depleted and the die wore out. A second die (Type II / long hair lock, catalog #15) was rushed into production.

This coin is the Type II long hair lock variety that followed the initial sell-out. These 2005 $20 rounds are the exact coins that marked the first major inflation adjustment in the Liberty Dollar system — pure history in silver.

All production stopped after the November 14, 2007 FBI/Secret Service raids on the Evansville headquarters and Sunshine Mint. This piece was minted years earlier and is pure pre-raid material.

Artist / Designer:

Created and designed under the direction of Bernard von NotHaus — the “Monetary Architect” of the Liberty Dollar, co-founder of the Royal Hawaiian Mint, and lifelong advocate of sound, commodity-backed money. The classic left-facing Liberty head with “LIBERTY / TRUST IN GOD / USA” and the reverse torch with “Liberty Dollar / $20 / TWENTY DOLLARS / ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER / 2005 / LIBERTYDOLLAR.ORG” are pure von NotHaus concepts executed to professional mint standards.

Mintage:

Exact mintage figures were never officially published. Contemporary collector records and Numista note “many thousands” of both the short-hair (Type I) and long-hair (Type II) varieties were struck. Type I was the initial stockpiled issue that sold out almost immediately during the Turkey Day exchange; Type II (this coin) followed.

Both are scarcer than later-date Liberty Dollars because production of the $20 base was still ramping up in late 2005 and was permanently halted by the 2007 raids.

This is not legal tender. It is a privately issued silver medallion / round from the NORFED Liberty Dollar system.
