2000 & 2005 NORFED Liberty Dollars $10 + $20 – 2 oz .999 Silver Private Currency:
$398.98

This is a pair of original NORFED Liberty Dollars — the private silver currency created by Bernard von NotHaus that the federal government later tried to shut down.

In 1998, von NotHaus launched the National Organization for the Repeal of the Federal Reserve Act and the Internal Revenue Code (NORFED). His goal was simple and radical: give Americans a voluntary, inflation-proof alternative to Federal Reserve notes. He called it the Liberty Dollar — real silver and gold pieces that people could actually use in trade.

These were never claimed to be U.S. legal tender. They were private voluntary barter currency, backed by physical metal and designed to compete with fiat money. Von NotHaus and his supporters argued that the Constitution never gave the federal government a monopoly on circulating currency.

The government disagreed.

In 2006 the U.S. Mint publicly warned that using Liberty Dollars as circulating money was a federal crime. In November 2007 the FBI and Secret Service raided the NORFED offices in Evansville, Indiana and the Sunshine Mint in Idaho, seizing tons of silver and gold. Von NotHaus was arrested in 2009 and convicted in 2011 of making coins that resembled U.S. coins. Prosecutors even called the operation “a unique form of domestic terrorism.”

Production stopped. The organization was dismantled. What remains are the surviving pieces that collectors still seek.

What’s included:

• 2000 American Liberty Currency $10

1 troy ounce .999 fine silver

Torch reverse with “AMERICAN LIBERTY CURRENCY” and “© NORFED 2000”

• 2005 Liberty Dollar $20

1 troy ounce .999 fine silver

Torch reverse with “LIBERTYDOLLAR.ORG” and the later $20 base denomination

Both pieces still sit in their original plastic flips. The silver is bright and the details are sharp.

These early dated pieces (especially the 2000 $10) are getting harder to find as more collectors lock them away. Together they represent two ounces of .999 silver from the most famous private currency experiment in modern American history.
