20 Austere hybrid willow cuttings, 10- 12 inches long and medium thickness, most optimal for propagation. Uf the cuttings are too thick, the extra wood mass absorbs water and nutrients otherwise used for new growth and sometimes will crack in hot weather; too thin, and the cuttings won\'t withstand the stress of transplantation, and even if they get established, it\'s less likely they\'ll make it trough the first winter/ drought period. I harvest the cuttings only after the order goes through to maximize viability. I have purchased cuttings in the past and they were dry and wrinkled, barely alive. Unfortunately, some merchants trim their trees in the fall or early spring and then sell weeks old cuttings, trying to capitalize on the trimmings. When fresh, the cuttings have a vibrant green color and the bark is plump. I recommend submerging at least 6-8 inches in water/soil for a robust root system. I personally plant my cuttings directly in wet soil rather than rooting in water first. This way the plant won\'t go through the stress of transplantation to a different medium.
