In ancient Rome, probes were used to clear blockages, diagnose illnesses, and examine wounds or body cavities. Spatulas were used to apply ointments or creams onto a patient, in addition to also functioning as a probe. Ligulas, or spoons, were used to extract ointments and powders from their tubes and boxes for medical or cosmetic purposes.
